Overview

About this book

This book deals with the basics of Research Methodology (RM) for Business Research and statistical analysis for dealing with data using two software: R (a free statistical analysis environment) and MS-Excel.

Apart from the basic concepts of Research Methodology, the book contains an additional chapter on improving academic writing. It contains important details on plagiarism, citation and referencing in MS-Word, and improving project/dissertation writing using free online software.

Chapter 1Introduction to Business Research, Research Process, Secondary Data Research, and Its Tools and Techniques

Pages: 29

The prime objective of any business organization is to maximize its profit which requires lots of decision making by the company people, especially the managers. Research helps a business organization and its managers in their decision making by studying a problem in a systematic manner, providing solutions that are supported by evidences, using scientific tools and techniques, and is well documented. Research helps in decision making by providing solutions to a problem, which are thoroughly investigated, both theoretically and scientifically. One of the important roles of business research is to generate information that helps a decision maker in making an optimum decision. The business problem of simple nature which can be solved with the help of repetitive measures do not need the help of research too often. Dissertation format is the more extended version of the research proposal and it includes all the steps people talked about in the research process.

Chapter 2Primary Data Research and Its Tools and Techniques

Pages: 7

The primary data comes handy when the objective of the researcher is to add new insight into the problem. The researcher collects the first-hand information from the participant by asking questions regarding his experience on the problem under investigation. Observation is about sensing the background information and the information which is present in hand. Indirect observation is required in some situations because our interaction can disturb the setting. Self-administered techniques are best suited for studies in which it is easy to assess the participants and the research site is under the researcher’s control. Email and telephone calls are best suited for situations where our respondent is busy, fixing the meeting in the office is difficult, contacting corporate offices (which generally are at important and big cities), or the respondent is at a distant location where it is not easy to approach.

Chapter 3Measurement, Scaling and Sampling

Pages: 18

Scales are used to measure the variable under study which includes comparison and ranking. The fundamentals of scale evaluation in a simple sense mean-making sure that our questionnaire is effective enough to measure the problem under study. Reliability and Validity are the tests related to the first point and Generalizability is related to the other. Split-half method performs by checking the results of one-half of a set of scaled items against the results from the other half of the scaled items. A good instrument should have these two key characteristics one, it should be consistent and two, it should be accurate. Multivariate procedures like factor analysis can be useful in establishing construct validity. A population is a complete collection of elements about which we wish to make some interpretation.

Chapter 4Data and Method of Analysis (Using Excel and R)

Pages: 63

Data analysis is one of the main chapters of project or thesis writing as it deals with understanding of our objectives with the help of numbers. There are so many tools in the market for data analysis & presentation, but worldwide MS Excel is used as a beginner’s software. Data visualization helps us in finding the pattern, shape and size of the data using graphs & charts whereas, the descriptive analysis performs the same but more descriptively using expressing parameters like mean, variance, skewness, maximum value, minimum value etc as numbers. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods come handy under experimental method and quasiexperimental methods where we are trying to measure the impact of a variable on a population. ANOVA is used when we need to study more than two populations. Correlation in statistics is a measure of how close two variables are to have a linear relationship with each other.

Chapter 5Improving Academic Writing

Pages: 7

Citation and referencing in research writing (or academic writing) is about giving credit to the person whose material we have used or are using for our research work. The complete details of the work to be cited include the name of the author, year of publication, the title of the research work cited, journal/book name, issue, volume, from where is it published, online link and other important details. Grammarly works by detecting the writing errors like contextual spelling, grammar, sentence structure, style, punctuation, vocabulary, in our word file. The free version covers basic spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and style correction. Whereas the premium or the paid version covers the advance issues, genre, vocabulary enhancement, and plagiarism check.
