Overview

About this book

Guided by the conceptualization of content knowledge, this book covers sports analysis (identification of techniques and tactics), skill analysis (identification of critical elements, observation, evaluation of students’ performance through error detection, and interventions), and biomechanical principles and their applications to skill performance and analysis, which teachers or coaches need to possess for effective teaching and coaching.

The importance for preservice and in-service physical education teachers or coaches to acquire in-depth content knowledge is supported by national standards and research. Studies have shown that an improvement in preservice and in-service physical education teachers’ specialized content knowledge leads to an increase in their pedagogical content knowledge, which results in better learning and performance among students. Practical examples for conducting sports and skill analysis, designing teaching progressions for interventions, and applying biomechanical principles are provided.

This book equips teachers or coaches with knowledge and skills to conduct sports and skill analysis, which are essential for effective teaching and coaching, and will be key reading for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in physical education teacher education and sports coaching and in-service physical education teachers and current coaches.

Part Section 1Sports and skill analysis

Pages: 26

No chapter abstract available.

Chapter 1Conceptual framework for sports and skill analysis

Pages: 9

Overview This chapter will introduce a conceptual framework for sports and skill analysis: Content knowledge and discuss classifications of content knowledge. The rationale for developing competence in sports and skill analysis among pre-service physical education teachers or coaches will also be discussed.

Chapter 2Skill analysis

Pages: 15

Overview This chapter will define skill analysis and introduce four different approaches to identifying performance errors. Various qualitative analysis models have been proposed to analyze human movements or sport skills. Commonalities and differences among those models are discussed. By integrating all previous models, an integrative biomechanical model of qualitative skill analysis is proposed. The integrated biomechanical model of qualitative skill analysis consists of four components: preparation, observation, diagnosis and evaluation, and interventions.

Part Section 2Preparation

Pages: 70

No chapter abstract available.

Chapter 3Preparation

Pages: 8

Overview To conduct qualitative skill analysis, a teacher or coach must possess various knowledge bases. The first component of the Integrative Biomechanical Model of Qualitative Skill Analysis is preparation. Preparation is the process where teachers or coaches build up knowledge bases or gather all the information necessary for qualitative skill analysis. There are five major knowledge bases for the teacher or coach to possess, including knowledge of performers, knowledge of sports skill, knowledge of the biomechanical model of the skill, knowledge of effective instructions, and knowledge of motor learning and control.

Chapter 4Sport analysis

Pages: 27

Overview This chapter will define sports analysis, skill, technique, and tactics. You will learn to understand the similarities and differences among skills, techniques, and tactics. You will also master the steps to successfully conduct sports analysis.

Chapter 5Understanding movement preparation

Pages: 10

Overview This chapter will focus on understanding movement preparation, specifically, a cognitive process that precedes the production of a skillful movement. The theoretical models and behavioral measures of movement preparation, as well as the factors that will influence movement preparation will be introduced.

Chapter 6Theoretical approaches

Pages: 7

Overview This chapter will focus on understanding the control mechanism underlying skilled movements. Two motor control mechanisms will be introduced. Despite their contrasting view on the role of afferent information in motor control, they are complimentary to help understand the flexibility in controlling human movements.

Chapter 7Knowledge of learners

Pages: 9

Overview This chapter will focus on understanding motor learning from the learner's perspective. Motor learning is a process that takes stages to happen. Two models of stages of learning will be introduced, in which the learners’ motor behavior and their instructional needs will be highlighted. Motor learning must be assessed by measuring motor performance and detecting an enduring change in motor performance. Different kinds of performance measures will be introduced to help with detecting motor learning.

Chapter 8Design task progressions

Pages: 7

Overview This chapter will define what task progressions are, introduce the concept of task and task development, and discuss factors that affect task complexity and how to design task progressions.

Part Section 3Biomechanical principles and applications to skill analysis

Pages: 63

No chapter abstract available.

Chapter 9Introduction and basic biomechanical concepts

Pages: 6

Overview The chapter intends to give a general introduction to biomechanical concepts in the form of definitions, equations, and examples of human movements. The goal is to provide the biomechanical content in a practical manner so that readers can connect the knowledge with their experience. Many examples in exercises and sports are provided for teachers or coaches to apply in their teaching or coaching.

Chapter 10Linear kinematics

Pages: 7

Overview This chapter will focus on linear kinematics. Linear kinematics describes motion without changes in the object's orientation. This chapter will also discuss variables used to describe linear kinematics, including linear positions, displacements, velocities, and acceleration.

Chapter 11Angular kinematics

Pages: 11

Overview This chapter will discuss the definitions and application of angular kinematics in analyzing human movements. Angular kinematics describes motion with changes in the object's orientation. The variables used to describe angular kinematics include angular positions, displacements, velocities, and acceleration (Hamill et al., 2015). The equations and relationships between linear and angular velocities will also be discussed (Hamill et al., 2015).

Chapter 12Linear kinetics

Pages: 22

Overview This chapter focuses on linear kinetics to understand the cause of linear motion. When an object starts from rest, the linear velocity is zero. Acceleration needs to be generated to initiate movements (Hamill et al., 2015).

Chapter 13Angular kinetics

Pages: 15

Overview This chapter will focus on angular kinetics to explain the cause of angular motion. When an object is not rotating or rotating with a constant angular velocity, a torque needs to be applied to the object to generate a change in angular velocity (Hamill et al., 2015).

Part Section 4Observation, evaluation and diagnosis, and intervention

Pages: 19

No chapter abstract available.

Chapter 14Observation

Pages: 6

Overview This chapter will define what observation is and discuss effective strategies for observation and steps to conduct effective observations.

Chapter 15Evaluation and diagnosis

Pages: 5

Overview This chapter will introduce the third component of the Integrated Biomechanical Model of Qualitative Skill Analysis. The terms of evaluation and diagnosis will be defined. Sources causing performance errors and how to prioritize performance errors for intervention will also be discussed.

Chapter 16Intervention

Pages: 6

Overview This chapter introduces the definition of intervention, which is the final component of the Integrative Bio-mechanical Model of Qualitative Skill Analysis. Varied forms of interventions to maximize students’ or athletes’ skill performances are also discussed in detail.
